Lj80 motor in a Lj20?
How hard would it be to put a lj80 motor in a Lj20? What are the differences in bell housing etc.

You would definitely need the LJ80 transmission, as they are quite a bit bigger. Other than that it should be doable.
It won't give you a higher top speed though, unless you swap the axles too. LJ80 axles are 4.56, whereas your LJ20 has 5.67 diffs.

Re: Lj80 motor in a Lj20?
Would it go under the hood or would that be a problem of clearance?
Anybody got what I need ?
Wife hates the weed eater sound and fumes...hade to pull the Motor so kinda looking at options.
Just for the record ... I love it!
Wouldn't mind a little more power and or speed though. The hills in Mansfield, Mo pull the little fella down to dangerous slow speeds on the road. For gravel roads or trails it's great.

It would be tight, but I think it would fit. The LJ80 hood is slightly higher than an LJ20 hood, but you could probably mount the engine lower, and use a 1-2" body lift if needed to be sure it clears everything underneath (i.e. axles).

Re: Lj80 motor in a Lj20?
Anybody got a lj80 engine and trans. ???
Or want to trade an lj20 for a lj80?
I have a Kubota diesel motor D600 out of a G5200 lawn mower that I hoped to use. The problem is it is hydrostatic and not sure what tranny I could use. Any ideas thoughts to ponder etc ? It is 599 cc good little tractor and motor but the deck was shot.

Hey ,
If you are willing to wait a bit (meh .. your wife .... )
I am going in France this summer (where my stach is) , for a job .
I could strap both on a pallet for you and drop them to a shipper you would hire (from zip 44130 france) .
Price would be to be defined but ridiculously fair i promise .

Thanks for the offer YAN'0 but the jeep is in Mansfield, Missouri and I'm not sure I got that kinda money to ship and put into it.

The LJ80 hood was made higher to fit the taller motor ... the 4 banger will rub on the metal, need a bit over half inch to clear it from memory. You can get this back with a body lift, one inch should be OK, two inch is better all round.
If you keep the stock gearing, you could pick up a couple MPHs by going up a tyre size or two. It will affect your braking a bit, but we don't care much about that anyway ... ...

Will do
Re: Lj80 motor in a Lj20?
This is an old thread, but I noticed Rusty asking about hydrostatic transmission options for his LJ. Hydraulics are an interest of mine. As far as options, if you have the mower than you have the hydraulic pump, hydraulic motors, hydraulic valves and other parts to install the complete hydraulic system into your LJ. The Pros for this would be efficiency and massive torque, the Cons would be 25 mph top speed and complexity. I see this as an option because you have the parts. Your top speed is limited by hydraulic motor speed. Hydraulic motors found in mowers are high displacement (high torque/low speed) There are motors of lower displacement and motors of variable displacement that would provide higher speed, but at substantial cost.
If this interests you, I have much information on the subject.
