I figure that would be about 7 to 8 thousand RPM... kaboom??
Some where I got a picture of what happens when the red line is left way behind... I got to find them!!! (flywheel thru the hood) When I got called to replace the motor, the only thig I salvaged was the generator, the oil pump and the back half of the trans.

Yes, a poor innocent LJ20O with a 100 Gal tank mounted over the rear wheel wells, the passenger seat removed and a 5hp pump installed, hooked to a spray nozzle off the back. And the widest 15" tires I've ever seen on the back. No front driveshaft. The largest privately owned lawn fertilization co. in MI used it to spray fert. and weed killer on parks, ball diamonds and other acreage in S.E. Michigan. I think they would use low range, 2nd. gear and maybe 3500 rpm to achieve the prescibed rate of application. So, one day, one of the clowns comes back and says the motor just exploded. No, I didn't over rev the thing. (Who Me?) I don't think you could have done a better job with a hand grenade. The flywheel went straight up through the hood cutting a three sided hole and peeling back the fourth side. Destroyed the front of the trans. Shredded the crankcase. I don't remember if the cylinders were intact, but I know they were unusable. Shattered rods, what pistons? Distributor broken off. Generator was ok, fan went into the radiator, with gen. still attached. I might have been able to save the water pump.... I think this would have been 1987... maybe. I got to find my picture book...

Long awaited, but sad, pictures

Post by russmehl »

Lets see if I can get these pics up on the first try...
Please keep in mind that I didn't do this. The guy that did, managed to explode one of the 2" plastic transfer pumps, filling his leg with shrapnel. Some people just don't know when to stop.

Post by Idahopaul »

Im in tears, rolling on the floor, laughing! so, howd you do it? :D
just kidding russ! I often wonder what a rotary engine would look like if you could wind it up enough to explode it, now I think I know.
so, I take it he was flooring it down hill with a full tank?(thinking: wonder if I should shift)

Hey!
If I did this, you would never, never, never see these pics. I'm going to ask my bro to see if he remembers any more of the details. (he was the ops. mngr.) Just thinking about this... if he left it in 1st, low and towed it at 70 mph... where is my calculator....
Besises, Jimny, when this happened I was working on producing children.........................

LOL!

I was figuring that the guy that did it was thinking about the date he was going to have that night. Not you. He had his mind on something else or just out having fun with it. That wa a LOT of RPM's!!!

Does trailing count as a 70 mph LJ20?

Post by DrizSki »

Okay - so does it count if its on a 20' Big Tex with a Dodge Cummins pulling it?
