Thanks for posting pics Tom! I'll try to go through mine tonight, and get some posted. I haven't even looked at my camera since I've been back.

Yes, and not just the LJ's. A couple of mornings I would wake up, try to take a deep breath, and it simply wouldn't work. (we camped at Eureka, elevation ~9800')

For the record, my GPS topped out at 13,145' above sea level, at Oh! Point (where we ate lunch just above Engineer Pass) Thursday, the day of the snowball fight, we went up Picayne Gulch and down Placer Gulch. We topped out at about 12,600 feet that day too.

It wasn't too bad - Smuz, Alice and George were all tent camping. Coldest it got in our camper was 55*, the last couple of mornings. I expect it was in the 40's outside those mornings, but it did warm up quickly as soon as the sun was shining in the valley.

I got my pictures onto my laptop last night - about 460 total, but most were from before the meet (i.e. Bryce Canyon, Hole in the Rock, etc.) I'll try to post some up tonight.

Sunnysidemine.JPG
That top photo of the concrete structure is from the Sunnyside mine, one of the oldest, largest and most important mines in the Silverton area. It's actually the foundation of the HUGE, dual piston direct-drive steam driven winch that hauled the ore skips up from the mine. Only the largest, best funded mines had this type of winch, which used a flat, ribbon type of cable that spooled up in a single column on the winch drum. There were examples of that type of winch cable strewn thru the debris surrounding the mine.

Ok, my pictures loaded up to photobucket this morning. I didn't get many of the LJ's though, mostly just scenery. Here are a few:

Suzuki Tom is much more informed than I but some of the reading available indicated it was common for gold, silver, copper, lead, etc. to be in the ore and with some of the mines that had less gold or silver, the amount of the lesser metals would be what allowed them to be profitable to work.

For me it was easy to think we were on a great adventure until I reminded myself how easy it was for us to drive 800 miles in an air conditioned vehicle on hard surfaced roads while towing the LJ for the purposes of having fun and then realizing what those early day folks that actually did the work had to work with. Kind of felt small then.

More pics.

Since our first meet in Cook City in 2007 we have admired the black and white friend named Christy (may be spelled wrong). She is a part of Steven and Pat Wages from California. She likes to catch Frisbees but more than that, after she catches one she will roam through the crowd at a quick walk and after picking out who she wants to throw it next, will silently drop the Frisbee behind that person and run out some distance and wait for the next throw. Most well-mannered dog (or person) I have ever met.

Yeah, Christy isn't as young as she used to be (she's 11 or 12 now), so she doesn't catch it as much, but she's in really good shape for her age. Pat did a lot of training when she was a pup, and it still shows. Border Collies are great dogs, but training and taking care of them is a full time job. Great for her since she is retired, but I just don't have the time required to devote to a dog like that.

I'll get Linda and Pat's pictures over the weekend and post some more next week. In the meantime, here are a few LJ pics from before the meet:

Kinda hard to tell from the picture, but this was taken around sunset, and that is the full moon rising. The moon was so bright that night that, even though we were in the middle of nowhere, without another person or any artificial light within miles, we could see clearly and walk around without a flashlight!

I remember that station. In fact, I gassed up on the other side of that same pump.
