Getting ready for Moab...
I'm working frantically to get ready for Moab. I figger on taking Mouser and Wilson.
Here's the to-do list:
Mouser:
1. Rebuild Master Cylinder. ****DONE****
2. Make TC shift boot and cover holes in tunnel. ****DONE****
3. License plate light. ****DONE****
4. Wash and clean. ****DONE****
Time permitting:
1. Rear shocks and mounts. ****DONE****
2. Back up lights. ****DONE****
Wilson:
1. Pull engine and replace clutch disk. ****DONE****
2. New battery ****DONE****
3. New fuel pump. ****DONE****
4. New carb. ****Nope, new one don't fit****
5. Check why fuel sensor is inop. ****Dunno, gonna hafta pull the tank this winter****
6. Wash and clean. ****DONE****
Trailer:
1. Change tires for new. ****DONE****
2. Fix fender. ****DONE****
3. Fab spare tire mount. ****DONE****
Xena the purple pig:
1. Find that pesky rattle underneath. *****Hmm.. seems to have disappeared****
2. Wash and clean.
Not too bad a list, compared to years previous. I love these meets, it forces me to get stuff done. :)

You're doing pretty good! My LJ is currently spread throughout my garage and carport
But I do have the engine, transmission and transfercase ready, but I still have to clean/fix/seal the fuel tank, rebuild the brakes, do some minor wiring repairs and get it registered for the road still.

Boy, don't I know it! When I bought this LJ back in January, it looked like a quick and easy fix up job. But the deeper I dug into it, the worse it looked. Turns out only the body was in good shape (rust free). All the drivetrain needed to be gone through. Between that and my job where I am on-call 24/7 I've had my hands full. I'll be taking a few vacation days between now and Labor day just to get it going!

Yikes, you do have a lot to do! At least the body is in good shape; for me bodywork is the worst part.

sounds like dad....though i doubt he'll be ABLE to register the Zuk within the month. engine/trans is sitting on a stool in the garage wanting to go back in.SuzukiTom wrote:You're doing pretty good! My LJ is currently spread throughout my garage and carport

Re: Getting ready for Moab...
Brings back memories of getting ready for the Cook City, MT. meet. Had to build the trailer from scratch. Got her done and made a short test drive to check it out. Loaded up the next day and headed for Cooke City wondering if my welds were ok. Tranny in the new (18,000 miles) GMC tow rig blew first 80 miles.
Get busy folks. Need to meet some new faces and re-meet some old ones.

Re: Getting ready for Moab...
Hey all,
Well, my LJ is starting to look a real vehicle instead of a pile-O-parts The last hurdle was pulling the brake drums off...I was worried about what I might find hiding in there! But I got a break (pun intended) and all they needed was a good cleaning. The shoes are near the lower thickness limit, but the drums are good, and no rust/corrosion anywhere. The original master cylinder was not salvageable, but I had another one from an LJ20 that was ok. But I had to spend some time fabricating a brake light switch mount to convert it from a hyd switch to a mechanical switch. Cleaned out the front knuckles, replaced the inner/outer seals, and repacked them with grease. Replaced all the ball joint boots, and adjusted the steering gear. The engine, transmission and transfercase are all done and ready to install. Pin holes in the fuel tank are brazed up and the inside of the tank is coated to catch any tiny leaks I might have missed. Took apart the combination switch and cleaned/lubricated it, and redid some wiring that was botched up by the previous owner.
I could maybe have it driveable by Sunday evening, except that the intermediate driveshaft is off at a driveshaft shop in Phoenix, AZ having its non-replaceable U-joints replaced, and it won't be back until Friday at the earliest.
Woo Hoo, I just might get it done in time for the Moab Meet! No time for cosmetics though, so it'll still have the bad white paint job, with the yellow flames on the hood. At least the pink paint highlights have faded to mostly white (except for the piping on the seat covers).
Well, I better get back to work,
Tom

Re: Getting ready for Moab...
The hydrostatic transaxle on my 4 year old riding lawn mower went bonkers so have been doing a steep learning curve on overhauling that instead of getting ready.
Think all I need is to do is adjust brakes, change gear greases, grease dist. and repack trailer wheel brgs. Getting excited we are as there will be some vacation prior to Moab.

Re: Getting ready for Moab...
Aw CRAP!!
I was congratulating myself on getting everything done on Mouser except for vacumming him out. Then I tried to move him. The freaking Samurai transfer case is stuck in neutral!! Those that have Samurai experience know that that's the classic symptom of of a worn out shifter sheet. Crap!
I was gonna pull the dual transfer case assembly and do the replacement on the bench, since the shifter recess is a real PIA to get to. Hmmm, that assembly is impossible to remove as a unit with the body in place.
So I have to:
1. Fix it as it sits
2. unbolt the body and lift it 3"
3. Attempt to unbolt the Sammi xfer case and remove it separate.
So I'm starting with 1. I got the shifter out, but I can't seem to get the shifter rods to move to get them into the proper position for replacement. Drat! I'm off to surf the web and find whatever help I can find.
Wish me luck.
Edit: Before anybody says anything that'll hurt my feelings, YES I did plan to change the shifter sheet before the body was installed. In fact, I thought I had but I found the new shifter sheet still in the package in my desk drawer, so I obviously forgot. Drat!

It's done. Most annoying part was getting the boot back on. But it's done.
Now I gotta change the gear oil in the xfer case, paint the rear shock mounts, adjust the seat belts, and vacume the thing out. Oh, and take some pics. :Þ

Wait a minute... I don't have to vacuum out my LJ's, do I? This isn't a beauty contest!

YOU prolly keep yours in a garage, whereas I keep mine under a freaking cottonwood tree!stevec wrote:Wait a minute... I don't have to vacuum out my LJ's, do I? This isn't a beauty contest!
Mouser's done. I just need to put the tool bag and the accessory bag in their places, move him out of the shop and cover him.
My boy Shane has decided not to take his Sidekick to Moab, he's just gonna take himself and his wife and drive one of mine. Prolly Mouser.
After lunch I'm gonna take the pics that Ruby's been pestering me about. I think. Then I gotta mow the blasted grass.

Re: Getting ready for Moab...
So. I decided to tighten Mouser's power steering belt before I moved him outside. So he immediately ate the freaking belt! I said WTF? Well, the idler pulley had walked off of its mounting a bit and the belt was running off the edge and self destructed.
Reseated the idler and installed a washer to prevent a recurrence. New belt and all is good. Glad he's getting this crap out of his system BEFORE we get in the middle of the desert.
I THINK he's done now.
I did take some pics and I'm off to his build thread to post 'em and get Ruby and Tweeter off my a$$.
