Rear Locker, Weld your Gears

Post by Jimny »

I was doing the rear end on my project 20 making it a "locker" and decided I might as well take pics and do a howto.

http://www.lj10.com/howto/diffweld/

Sorry about the blurred pics, I am still learning that damn camera, I should have bought an easy cheap one. This one can do everything but wipe my rearend!

When I was writing it all up I kept thinking 'did Smuz say he was going to do a howto on this subject?' I couldn't remember.

Doesn't matter on the brake rebuild. I will be doing just that pretty soon. But since you already have your brake shoes done you might be doing it sooner.

BTW: while we (Shane w/ Whacker and I w/ Wilson) were at the cliff, stopped and letting Wilson's brake drum cool off, a Jeep TJ came upon us. The Jeep made a left turn and went up a gnarly hill. Whaddaya think happened then? Well, Shane and I juss hadda follow him up that piddly little hill. He took off without stopping. Coward! Wilson had less problem with that hill than the jeep did. Pffffftt!!

I was thinking of welding the rear diff in my LJ50 in the past and was strongly discouraged by some people............. :?
How well have you found lj20's stock axels to hold up this when only used off road?

I have one in my ole beater 20 and it has been in there for about 6 years and I have not had any problems what so ever, and when I got out 4 wheelin I give it hell. I have done 2 20's that way and both have had no problems.

In fact for those of you that don't know how to do it, there is a How To on the subject. Check out the "How To" section in this forum.

The difference in grip is awesome. I snapped two axles with a welded diff but I had a datto 1200 powering it and was giving a lot of hell ( rolling back and I punched it . not very smart)

The standard motor will be fine. I know a guy who has welded his sierra like this and that was over two years ago and its a daily driver. He says its great. no problems at all.

Question: At what depth should the welds be finished off to, and how much free play should there be between the axles, if any?

Welded mine up last week, first up I tried to reassemble but welds were too high, and the assembly wouldn't tighten down, so I pulled it apart again, and ground them down. Thinkin I went too far as I can now rotate the axles about a tenth of a turn before they lock. so now I guess I gotta pull it down again :-(

That's prolly OK. They just need to be welded to about the top of the gear teeth. Yer gonna have a little play in the shaft.

No Tom, You need either MIG, cast or spring steel compatible rods, or oxy. (with the pink fluxed rods)

How did you break an axle?

Where did it break at?

Right now I would say to use one of your spares and fix it today.

Ahhhhhh, I wsa thinking that I couldn't see a way for it to do it on it's own.

it could cause problems leaving it in there while driving down the road, a lot of problems.
