Alternator Replacement for LJ-80

Just put a Sammi alternator on an LJ-80. Why? "Cause I hadda Sammi alternator and I'm cheap!

It was easy. Bolts right up. Hadda use a Sammi belt.

The wiring is different, 'cause the Sammi has a built in regulator and the 80 has an external regulator. I just hooked up the battery wire as was, and ran a new wire from the "Ign" terminal on the alternator to the ignition side of the coil. Works like a charm. You can even put in a jumper from the "L" terminal of the alternator to the existing wiring harness and then jumper two wires in the connector at the existing voltage regulator and make the charge light work juss like it's supposed to. Otherwise, just unplug the voltage regulator and leave it.

Anybody want more details, drawings, or color codes, juss lemme know.

OK Vidar, here we go.

According to the wiring diagram, the charge light is fed by a switched 12 volt hot from the ignition switch internally in the combination meter (dash cluster).
A wire going from the other side of the charge light to the voltage regulator is grounded to earth when the alternator is not charging, causing the charge lamp to glow and open to ground when the alternator is charging, causing the lamp to be out. this wire is connected to the "L" terminal of the original voltage regulator and is white with a red stripe. Page 148 of the FSM.

This W/R wire is what you connect to the "L" terminal of the alternator to make the charge light operate as normal.

Now I think that one should be able to jumper the W/R wire to the White/black wire at the voltage regualtor plug and then connect a jumper from the W/B wire at the old alternator plug to the new alternator "L" terminal and make the charge lamp work properly.

One should also be able to jumper from the Black/White wire to the White/Green wire at the old reguator plug and connect the W/G wire from the old alternator plug to the "IGN" terminal of the new alternator and eliminate the wire from the alternator "IGN" to the coil hot.

Clear as mud, right?
