Re: 2010 Meet Location

Well, I'm voting for South Dakota, but I'd really like to check out Idaho, too. What a conundrum!

We didn't take many photos, but here are a couple of them. Too bad someone placed all those ugly old LJs in them :))):

Re: Reports, pictures from the meet!

For the record, we had ten LJ's (five LJ10's and five LJ20's) and one Samurai at the meet this year: Myself, the wife, and kids with two LJ10's Mom and Stephen with their LJ20 Smuz and Alice, with Wasp and Michelle, and two LJ10's Myers and Winnie with their LJ20 Tweedy Bird and Edie with their LJ2...

Re: Reports, pictures from the meet!

A repeat picture of what Wasp posted but this was a very impressive spot to see and well worth the up and down climb. The vehicle is the very small dot in the lower left corner of the parking lot. That parking lot is the trailhead for the Moab Rim Trail, on the other side of the Colorado River. Ano...

Have you considered Grecian Formula? Anyhow, we are in Clovis, NM tonight and will be home early afternoon Sunday. Hated to leave paradise.

Re: Getting ready for Moab...

Mostly ready to go. Still have the title/registration and safety inspection to go before it's road legal, but we'll be doing that Monday. Our plans are to leave on Saturday morning and take two days to get to Moab so we can sightsee along the way. LH_Rear.jpg eng_bay.jpg See you there, Tom & Nancy

Re: Getting ready for Moab...

It's alive! Once I figured out I had the distributor in 180 degrees out, if fired right up! Now, when I get my intermediate driveshaft back from the shop, I'll be able to take if for a test drive. Hopefully, that'll be early this week. Besides that, all I need to finish up is the fabrication ...

Re: Getting ready for Moab...

Hey all, Well, my LJ is starting to look a real vehicle instead of a pile-O-parts :D The last hurdle was pulling the brake drums off...I was worried about what I might find hiding in there! But I got a break (pun intended) and all they needed was a good cleaning. The shoes are near the lower thickne...

Re: Getting ready for Moab...

Boy, don't I know it! When I bought this LJ back in January, it looked like a quick and easy fix up job. But the deeper I dug into it, the worse it looked. Turns out only the body was in good shape (rust free). All the drivetrain needed to be gone through. Between that and my job where I am on-call ...

Re: Getting ready for Moab...

You're doing pretty good! My LJ is currently spread throughout my garage and carport :ohno: But I do have the engine, transmission and transfercase ready, but I still have to clean/fix/seal the fuel tank, rebuild the brakes, do some minor wiring repairs and get it registered for the road still. Tom

Re: Chemical Two-Stroke Exhaust System Decoking

Well, I drained and flushed the lye solution out of the exhaust system, and it seems to have worked ok, and it didn't damage the fiberous stuff in the expansion chamber. There is still a thin layer of carbon in the back (muffler) section of the exhaust, but it's a lot better then it was. Now I've ju...

Re: Chemical Two-Stroke Exhaust System Decoking

Well, I had a bit of a delay, I filled the system with straight water to look for any and leaks. Found a few pinholes that I had to weld up, and now it's sitting with the caustic soda/water mixture in it. This stuff is self-heating, since it's reacting with the oil/carbon in the exhaust. I'm going t...

Re: Chemical Two-Stroke Exhaust System Decoking

Ha ha!

I hadn't really thought about the lining in the expansion chamber, but it couldn't be any worse on the asbestos then burning the carbon out. I'll be doing this procedure this weekend, so I'll let you know.

Re: Chemical Two-Stroke Exhaust System Decoking

caustic soda, so like draino? where else can you get it and in that much volume. Caustic soda (Sodium Hydroxide) is one of the ingredients in Draino, but it's pretty watered down. You used to be able to get the stuff from janitorial supply stores. It's still used in the making of soap, and you can ...

Chemical Two-Stroke Exhaust System Decoking

There is another way to remove the built-up carbon and oil in the exhaust system of a two-stroke exhaust. We used this method back in the '70s at a shop in-town where we couldn't use the thermal method due to the smoke created. This is a SERIOUSLY dangerous cleaning solution, so caution needs to be ...

Yep, that's Wilson Arch. It's right on Hwy 191 just South of Moab, you can't miss it. What you can't see in that photo is all the new homes that are going in just on the other side of the arch :-(

My wife set up the reservations online, and she said that she did mention it on the reservation form. We haven't gotten our confirmation back yet, so I don't know if we got a cabin or not. Tom, did you tell them that you were with the LJ10.com group? They will put you over with us, most likely right...

My wife and I are planning on attending the Moab meet. We've made our reservations at the Slickrock Campground, but haven't received the confirmation yet. Re: Can a Expansion Chamber be built for....

I know that this thread has been dead for a few months now, and ended on a sour note. But I think that it deserves revisiting. The exhaust system on the LJ I just bought is in poor condition. Although the expansion chamber seems ok, the rest of the system is very rusty. I happen to have some experie...
