Re: Tried to make it...really!

Sounds like a great trip, sorry the road closures detoured you. The north road through Yellowstone to Cooke City is kept open all year because it is the easiest route to Cooke City to keep open. Beartooth Pass is spectacular - I loved that drive, even with the truck/camper/trailer combo heating up t...

Re: 2014 Lj Meet?

...On our first (Cooke City, MT), I was actually anticipating to discover a few internet strangers were pulling a trick on me and no one else would be there when we got ther. Since we only had 4 LJ's there, and two were mine, it kinda felt that way to me, although that was the year a LOT of people ...

Re: 2014 Lj Meet?

Not really doing the "official" LJ meets anymore, since there hasn't been much interest. :-( I've moved the "Suzuki Meets" topic to the top of this section, so that anyone organizing a meet/trail run can post up there, and it should be easier to find. If anyone wants to plan a me...

Re: LJ80 birfields replacements

I have a very hard time believing it is the same as a Suzuki Swift CV joint. The Swift is the same as a Geo Metro, which are still plentiful in North America, so it shouldn't be too hard to look at one.

Re: Date, Location

If anyone is interested, I usually plan a trip up to Tucquala Lake in August. There are about 10-15 miles of 4WD trails up there with alpne lakes, old mines, and great views. The trails aren't terribly hard - a stock rig will be challenged, but can make it (I've taken stock LJ's up there before.) Yo...

Re: Date, Location

From what I can see, Tommy and Erik were the only ones who expressed interest. We're doing a WABDR run in July for Wazuks; if anyone here wants to come, you are always welcome. We'll also have a meteor shower run in August, and a Labor Day weekend run. We can plan a more formal LJ meet if there is e...

We live at the end of a cul de sac, so we don't get a lot of traffic on our street, but it does happen now and then. More common is when I take them out around town. Just about every time someone will stop to ask about it.

Re: Replacement for plastic mirror trim

Yes, new mirrors are still available. They come in primer grey, so you need to remove that seal to paint them (properly). On new mirrors it is pretty easy to remove; not so much on older mirrors that have been sitting out in the elements!

Re: Replace Lj10/20 drum brakes with disc brakes – a summary

There are kits to convert Samurai's to rear disc brakes, but all involve relocating the e-brake to the driveshaft or t-case. Samurai drum brakes should just about bolt on (I think the bolt pattern is the same?), and gives you a rear-axle e-brake. That would be your best solution.

Re: Alternative shifters

LJ's are going to be somewhat unique in that the gear shifter is separate from the transmission. On Samurai's, the shifter fits right into the top of the shift case on the transmission, whereas on LJ's there is a shaft that connects the shifter to the shift case on the transmission. In my opinion, t...

Re: Alternative shifters

The shifter you see from the driver's seat is just the lever you move to change the gears - the actual shift case of the transmission is about 10 inches forward of this. You can put a different one on if you don't like the look, but the detent balls are all in the shift case of the transmission, so ...

Re: Extreme Bends makes LJ80 body parts

Do a search through the forms for extreme bends or EBI. There are a few different threads with people commenting on them. No glowing recommendations that I've seen. They get the panels from a place in Colombia, so if you order, don't expect them for a few months, and don't expect them to fit without...

Re: Parts cleaning

I use a small (3 gal?) parts washer for small stuff, and have a 30 gal. for big stuff. The big one just uses a cheap degreaser diluted with water, the small one uses a parts cleaning solvent. Bearings should not be affected at all by either. Seals probably are, but I always replace them with new one...

Re: The connection between Twinkies and my first LJ

Great story Larry! I was never much of a Twinkie fan, though I liked the Ho-Ho's. Back in college (around 1990) when I would see people with a Twinkie, I would tell them my "Twinkie theory": That Hostess actually stopped making Twinkies in 1979, and that they have the remaining inventory s...

Re: Date, Location

I think lj meets should be a group plan not just a one person decision. Ideally, that's true. Realistically, you can't get more than 3 people to even agree when to have lunch, much less plan sumpin like a meet. It normally all comes down to one person taking the bull by the tail, facing the situati...
